This is how hey describe themselves:
The things we sell are a surprising mix of vintage and new from a variety of sources - but they all share the qualities integral to our repair, reuse, rethink philosophy.

One of our favourite things is to reuse unloved bits and pieces (small or large) that we find on our travels, and give them a new lease of life - it's our version of recycling... so abandoned bobbins from old textile mills turn up on our shelves as egg timers, lamp bases or string holders; scraps of floor board become mirror frames, tables or even kitchen units.

When we're not rescuing and recycling, we design simple useful products with a subtle sense of humour and nice labels. We also source some things from small family run companies who have been making the same things for generations - such as beautiful Burleigh pottery - still made in Stoke-on-Trent.

Our biggest project so far has been the move to Whitecross Farm - it's taken about 2 years to sympathetically restore and repair the run down buildings and turn them into our store, which is definitely worth a visit.

Brits' love of fashion rides out recession!

The recession has not dampened British women's love of fashion as new research shows nearly half of female shoppers have spent the same or more on their clothes in the last year.

A report published by Mintel this week reveals that despite gloomy reports that consumers are tightening their purse strings, over half of UK consumers (54%) did not reduce the amount they spent on updating their wardrobes. More than four in ten consumers (43%) did not change their clothes shopping habits and a dedicated one in ten (11%) followers of fashion said they actually spent more on clothes than they usually would over the past year.

Overall, nearly half of women in the UK (12.7 million) spent the same or more on their clothes despite the economic difficulties.

Comment:
So the "Lipstick Effect" really is true! Great news for all those indy fashion boutiques out there!

Well where do I start? Anthropologie (the posh sister of urban outfitters!) has brought the eclectic indy retailer style to a large chain of shops and really pulls it off. Their designs are gorgeous on every level and their styling is some of the most inventive I have seen. The new shop on the Kings Road is just to die for. From the fantastic window displays to the living plant walls and wacky art installations dotted around the shop. Once upon a time, there was a girl who spent her days scouring the globe to put together splendid outfits for equally splendid people. People from all walks of life, including some of the world's most beautiful and famous stars, would ask the girl to choose lovely garments, shoes, bags and accessories so they could continue looking so lovely.

She liked making people look so nice but was frustrated by the limited amount she could help and wondered how she could pass her knowledge and aesthetic to many more. Years later, after travelling all over the world, she had a dream.

In the dream there was a place containing the most exquisite clothes, accessories and objects from around the globe. Some were new, some were old but all were beautiful. The windows and walls of the place were adorned with works of art from talented artisans and crafts people and the place was a joy to visit with lots of launches and events happening regularly. When she woke up, she set about bringing the dream to life...

Stylist Zoe Lem created My Sugarland as the answer to various problems raised by clients during her extensive styling experience. Just a stone's throw from Angel tube station in Islington, My Sugarland is a 2500 square foot space that fulfils numerous purposes – a unique retail experience and a gallery space or 'blank canvas' for artists and new designers.

Having worked for over ten years as a stylist, Zoe has given the store a distinct handwriting by creating a space that houses garments and accessories from a pot pourri of labels from across the globe. From established names and fledgling designers (some exclusive to the store) to vintage pieces (1920's to 1970's) scoured from across the globe (so you don't have to). Labels include Terry de Havilland, Armand Basi, PPQ, Hoss Intropia, Jenny Dyer, SteveJ and YoniP, Evie Belle, Mawi, Comfort Station, Belle Sauvage, Jacob Kimmie and many more. Pipa Boutique in Little Venice, London W9 opened in August 2008 and since then has been really well received by local residents and tourists alike.

The Pipa boutique is a lifestyle store featuring funky fashion, make up and lovely objects for the home including French ceramics by Astier de Villatte and Glasshouse candles. All the beautiful vintage Indian and Tibetan furniture in the shop which is used for display is for sale too.

The owner Bhavna is a make up artist and graduated from The London College of Fashion seven years back.

"I grew up in India and have always had a flair for fashion. I flew as an air stewardess for Singapore airlines, which really taught me a lot about great customer service. I’ve been living in Maida Vale with my two boys and husband and decided to open a boutique here as I love the area and thought it would be a great addition to the relaxed village feel here."

There are two floors and downstairs is for kids. Its a really magical space with fairy lights and wonderful traditional, wooden toys.

Established in 1999, Couverture specialises in covetable one-off designer pieces for the home, European fashion collections for women, cute knitted toys and children’s clothing and accessories, as well as an ever changing flow of vintage finds.

Founder Emily Dyson originally began her career in fashion, working as a designer for Paul Smith.

The idea to set up on her own came about when she was trying to source furnishings and accessories for her new home. Emily was struck by the lack of desirable and original bed linen to be found anywhere and realised that she had discovered a niche market that simply wasn’t being catered for.

Combining her specialist knowledge of embroidery techniques with her design expertise, she set about producing her own collection. “My experience in the fashion industry taught me that it was the detailing I loved, rather than the construction of a piece. The subtleties are the things that really make a difference.”

The first Mail Order brochure was launched in Autumn 1999, followed by the opening of the Couverture shop in London’s Chelsea later that same year.

However, since then Couverture has evolved into a one-stop destination for desirable and unexpected products for the home and the collection now extends to include original fashion labels for women and children. Emily’s carefully sourced items are often available in only small quantities due to the intricate hand work involved and several designs are developed exclusively by Emily for Couverture, including soft lambswool throws and accessories for the home and a children’s knitwear collection.

Emily Dyson’s unique style continues to make Couverture a favourite haunt for both interiors and fashion stylists, as well as for the discerning customer.

Starburst threw an afternoon tea party on Saturday 2nd May to celebrate the arrival of all the new Spring/Summer collections. Ex-circus showgirl and fashion consultant Brenna Dickenson was on hand to offer free colour consultations to all customers while they sipped Russian Caravan tea, and nibbled on gorgeous macaroons and cakes! The afternoon was a roaring success with the Champagne corks being popped at 4.00pm and much dancing around the wind-up gramophone. (Pics coming soon!)

Starburst Boutique will also be taking part in a charity fashion show on the 21st May in aid of Dartmouth Caring. Tickets cost £15.00 and are available through Starburst Boutique

We’ve all noticed Oxfam getting more and more upmarket over the past 10 years, gone are the days when you could get a genuine bargain in there, but take another look because the high street charity chain is branching into the unknown with their first “boutique”.

To celebrate the launch, seven British designers have made one-off pieces using clothing from the charity shop which will be auctioned on eBay. If this boutique is a success then two more will follow in the summer.

As well as preloved fashion there will also be fashion and accessories from the likes of People Tree and Wright & Teague, as well as this some of the donated clothes will be getting worked on by young designers from the London College of Fashion.

Designer boutique Coco Ribbon goes into administration

The Luxury underwear, clothing and gift boutique Coco Ribbon has ceased trading after the economic downturn caused a slump in sales.

The west London store had recently publicised plans to expand into Russia. It had also reported a 60% growth in its online output and had been nominated by fashion industry magazine Drapers for a best independent online retailer award.

However, Alison Chow, founder of Coco Ribbon, said online sales did not contribute enough for the company to remain buoyant. The retailer is currently entering administration and will assess a number of restructuring options.

The high-end boutique, which opened in 2002, closed its Sloane Street store in 2006. Its streamlined offering included a Notting Hill boutique, an online presence at www.cocoribbon.com and a supplier relationship with department stores including Harvey Nichols.

It has been a favourite among celebrities and received regular publicity in the women's glossies.

Coco Ribbon's panty postman service received particular coverage. For £58 the boutique would post two new pairs of knickers to the customer's door every three months.

Designer Karmin Kenny started the label 1.5 years ago with a small range of embroidered dresses that were snapped up by the likes of Graham and Green in London and Mee in Bath. Hannah Nicole's chose to have the brand produced at a small family run establishment in the Hills of the North of Portugal: A country with strict trading standards, fair wages and the finest quality. The fabric is made in neighbouring Turkey, transported by van to Portugal for production and then transported to the UK. Portugal’s manufacturing standards are well known in the textile industry, however over recent years a lot of retail companies have moved to the Far East, leaving factories in Portugal suffering. By working with these factories, Beaumont can help re-establish one of the most thriving textile communities, whilst also being ethical, environmental and trading fairly.
